New postponement of Carlos Manuel de São Vicente’s trial: his lawyers demand his immediate release.
Luanda, 26 January 2022 – While the trial of the Angolan businessman Carlos Manuel de São Vicente was supposed to start today in Luanda, it was once again postponed due to an error of notification of the Court. His lawyers, who are on site, demand his immediate release.
The trial of the Angolan businessman Carlos Manuel de São Vicente was supposed to start in Luanda this Wednesday, 26 January 2022. However, late this morning, Mr. São Vicente was informed that his trial had been postponed due to an error by the court in the notification of the trial’s date. It is the second time that the trial is postponed.
His lawyers, who were attending the opening of the trial in Luanda, immediately responded: “Due to an error of notification by the court, our client’s trial had to be postponed for the second time. Meanwhile, he remains in prison illegally and in poor health. We demand his immediate release and that the Angolan authorities respect the international treaties to which the country has subscribed“.
Despite this call for his release and the illegality of his detention, it seems that Mr. São Vicente will remain in prison. As a reminder, he had been detained on 22 September 2020. After a controversial extension of 12 to 14 months, this provisional detention expired on 22 November 2021. This means that Mr. São Vicente has been held illegally for 66 days in particularly difficult conditions. The prison of Viana is overcrowded and he has no access to running water or drinking water, nor to adequate medical care despite his fragile health which has deteriorated significantly.
